i've recently started commuting clipless too. changing shoes isn't really hard at all. for rides < 1 mil (to get to and from class) i get lazy and just use street shoes on clipless pedals.

I think the main thing is that the speedplay cleats are too bulky for walking and with the covers even bulkier...
get some shimano 520's/egg beaters. either one should be pretty cheap. plus mtb shoes = win
