i think we need a thread for purchases that we're uncertain of. i'll start.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/1418703370.html

good price, open sport rims are pretty good....pie plate? what? are the hubs total shit? wtf? should i get these? i've already expressed interest and got in not too long after they were posted, so i can probably get these if i want. just not sure about the hubs, the build, could be generic to shitty but on a good rim.

they're probably nothing special, but they'll suffice, i think. don't let the pie plate scare you. it's required.

They look fine to me. The price seems just about what they're worth, not a screaming deal. If you need a set of beater road wheels, go for it.

BTW, don't bother putting Vittoria tires on those things. Open Sport + Rando was the most fucking aggravating bike wrenching experience I've ever had.

machine built, priced roughly what they're worth

hubs are probably decent

are these going on a work bike? 24/28 spoke rims probably aren't the best choice, but i'm not you.

They look like take off's from one of the specialized tarmac's that come with shite wheels. At least those hubs look like the unbranded hubs specialized built their wheels on for a while, the mid range rim (read: not those lame alex's) suggests they might have come off a mid range tarmac or something.

the ad states that they were a take off from a new specialized roubaix elite.

I found an older tk2 thats about 4 sizes to small for me with a HED disc out back, mavic carbone up front, 75's clip ons, bla bla bla. Anyway it was posted locally, but then the dude says he moved across the country. Complete bike for $880 shipped. I'd sell the frame and bs parts I dont need, keep the wheelset and maybe post. Anyways is it worth the gamble or simply to good to be true.

It sounds like a decent deal for someone looking to flip, but not killer. If it were your size, I'd go for it, but in the middle of fall/winter, you're going to have a hard time getting anything decent for a few-generations-old TK2 in a small size, unless you're willing to hold onto it until spring.

Also this thread is startlingly similar to the 'worth it?' threads in both marketplace and bikes. Grindmaster, what do you want those wheels for?

$300 seems high. for rsx. and threaded (aluminum?) fork. and you don't have any specific need for it.

you think so? i guess i was just imagining a thread more for purchases of things you know little about and want suggestions on, rather than price being a main consideration. but, you're right, it is pretty similar.

and the wheels would be for a work bike, but not planning on it being a "carrying lots of heavy stuff" work bike. my notion of a work bike is somewhere between a beater and a good bike--you want solid parts that aren't going to give you any trouble or fail on you, but you don't want to spend a lot and end up (knock on wood) getting it stolen or crashed or anything either.

i think i'm going to go performance and pick up a set of these, assuming they're also on sale at the store. i don't know if messenger discount gets added to the sale price, but while it's more it's something i trust more that i picked up myself and can get a lifetime warranty on.

150-175 max i'd say. really if you want a mtb for a beater, i'd keep an eye open for much cheaper/free parts.

it's an easy flip for several hundred dollars of profit (assuming frame isn't damaged), at least. i'd assume older ultegra stuff, but even that has some decent value

You can probably sell that Serotta for $700-800, which is a decent profit but may or may not be worth your time and effort, not to mention tying up $500 in a bike until you can turn a profit on it. I'd buy it if you were looking for a kickass steel roadie. The Colorado Concept tubing is the greatest steel tubing ever produced, and Serotta used it to make the best bikes ever made. No exaggerating.

frame is pretty much exactly want from a cannondale (my size, cantilevered dropouts, etc. i also love black. also 3.0 is supposed to be a gentler ride than earlier models). trouble is, i don't really want anything that's hanging off the frame but i'm not sure i could really sell it either. think i could get rid of that other crap and offset the purchase cost somewhat?

1990 or so merckx corsa $1000

this would become my main bike. trained and raced on. i know it wont be as good a race bike as my orbea, but goddamit, this is my dream bike. id put either alloy centaur or alloy athena 11 on it.

plus: nigh on my dream bike
campy
7-11 scheme, also dream bikey
always wanted a steel merckx

cons: have to sell my orbea
heavy?

Keep Orbea.
Sell riser'd TT.

id probably have to sell both actually. i could afford both, but racing the orbea and then having the merckx as a sunday driver just seems silly. a grand is too much for something i wont be training/racing/riding on a regular basis, for me anyway.

you think 1k is a lot? i usually see corsa frames go for 7-800.

There's nothing to stop you from riding the fuck out of it, but comparing it to my '80s Razesa, which is 3cm longer in the ST and HT and fully chromed, it's heavy in your hands and it just doesn't have anything special going for it other than the rad paint scheme.

A lot of races were won on those frame.

probably a little hoodwinked. you don't get seconds shaved off your time if you race a steel merckx against an all alum/carbon field...
