those shitty forged cogs that come on cheaper complete bikes
alright. kind of a review, more like a research and development case. A LBS and i have been in conversation about the shitty, usually 16t forged, no name cogs that come on many complete fixed gears as of late. Their research has yielded no results as to who makes the cogs, no one's owning up to it.
now, the question you might have is: well, cole, wtf is wrong with the cogs?
i'll tell you. the threads on the cog are the right pitch, but they aren't drilled deep enough, so when you put them on the hub, they eat up the threads on the more expensive part. this happened to one of my hubs, specifically a swobo sanchez hub (made by joy-tech i think). when we took the chain whip to it to remove the cog, which had never been done before, we weren't able to. it felt as though the cog was moving, but it would lock up right away. we finally had to get a chain and put the wheel in a vice. Though I was able to get a new hub from swobo at the time, their rep denied the cog's faulty nature, saying that it was due to use outside the normal wear of the cog.
SO,
basically just wondering if you've had the same problem, and if you haven't, check your cog. take that thang off immediately. you can tell if the back of the cog has a rounded off edge rather than a hard, straight one. I'm not sure what the next step is, but we should try and get these things off the market. i'm sure people would be willing to pay the extra ten bucks to get a better cog that won't break their shit when they're buying a bike. just saying.

homeboy is trying to get all up in SV's shit.
Also yeah we've heard countless stories of this happening. Bikesdirect claims it's not tightened enough or something.
it could have been that whoever assembled the bike didn't grease the hub and cog threads...
also, please explain this:
The hub is more expensive than the cog.

also: i don't think so. we've looked at cogs that have come off clean, and they just feel shallower than, say, a surly or dura ace cog. This has happened to multiple hubs, so we're pretty sure it's a manufacturing flaw.

Happened to my last shitty wheelset. Its fix/fix so the shitty cogs just jammed on one side and im gonna put a huge cog on the opposite and use em as a polo wheelset

alright. so after much poking and prodding, the dude from my LBS convinced the lady at swobo that the cogs they were strapping on their bikes were shoddy. As a result, swobo MIGHT start putting the same cogs that surly and soma put on their complete bikes. Not too sure on a more extensive description of the conversation they had, but it's a start.
the deal was, that the cogs were almost a full mm less wide than say, a DA cog, so when the lockring was put on, it was just able to annihilate the threads, moving back and forth. another company who makes the same cogs includes a spacer, but why not just change your manufacturing specs? this problem could also be solved with the surly lockring, which is built differently than most with that little spacer guy in it. far from the end of this issue, but we're getting there.

Yikes. Ive got a forumla cog, its forged, but it shouldnt be as shitty as those.. right?
what did it come on? a complete bike or a separately purchased formula hub? i wouldn't be so sure.

I bought it separately for a few dollars to qualify for free shipping haha.
Do cheapie cogs come on the Kilos now because mine came with a dura ace 16t. Never had a problem with the hub in 3 years either after I learned how to properly tighten a cog and lockring.

i don't know how the hell yours came new with a DA cog. a majority of the bikes that are having this problem are kilos.

i have a really cheap shitty stamped cog. its never slipped or destroyed a hub ever. people need to learn how to install cogs correctly.
i agree with you about people needing to know how to install correctly, but those cogs can make it impossible. it sounds like you got lucky. i don't understand why people, bike companies included, can't spend like $5 more to get parts that won't fuck their rear hubs...

thank you. I'm not inferring that ALL stamped cogs are of incorrect width and size, I'm simply saying that from one manufacturer, there is a problem directly linked to quality. I was unaware, and frankly astounded that a company would assemble a bicycle with such sub-par componentry, thus did not deem it necessary to check these things before it was already too late. Bottom line, It's not an isolated incident, but it's also not the case 100% of the time.

oh damn did not read about the cog that was not the correct width. those kind of production oversights are what strips hubs.
i guess formula cogs or whatever the hell this thing is are alright. the threads are real rough though so maybe i am just lucky.
its like the one thing that everyone on tarck (with a brain) can agree on, the one piece on a track bike that you can get the best of for $5 more than the shit, there is no reason to cheap out.

agreed with above and just to clear it up, stamping is different from forging. Forging makes things much stronger.
Bump---Sorry, just noticed that 3/4 of the subforums here had posts with a swear word on top, and i wanted to make it 4/4.
